HUNGARIAN GRIPEN
TAILOR MADE FOR INDUSTRIAL AND ECONOMIC GROWTH
When Hungary and Sweden agreed on a lease/purchase contract for 14 Gripen aircraft, the agreement not only included one of the world’s most capable fighters. It also comprised an industrial cooperation programme designed to support Hungary’s ambitions regarding industrial and economical growth.
At Saab, we believe that a vital part of a successful offset deal is the ability of the supplier to adapt and adjust according to new business and investment opportunities, enabling the customer nation to expand and develop.
Development and growth
By choosing Gripen, Hungary not only acquired a new and stronger defence capability enhancing its ability to defend its borders and to carry out NATO assignments. The offset programme that was included in the agreement also made it possible to take advantage of Hungary’s strategic position and its skilled and highly qualified workforce. It also paved the way for a stronger GDP growth, industrial and technological development, regional development, new jobs and increased tax revenues.

“For many Hungarians the word ‘Gripen’ means not only a high tech Swedish fighter but also a fantastic long-term economic development programme. The programme has been concluded ahead of schedule and I’m confident that the whole country will continue to benefit, both from the new defence capability that Gripen brings and from the long term economic benefits of the offset program.” says Dr. Szabó Sándor, Head of Offset Section, Ministry of Economy and Transport |

Long-term commitment
This development and growth is the result of a sustainable, long-term commitment, which means that the Gripen effect will benefit Hungary 30 years or even longer into the future.
